Northeast Florida Society of Brewers
Official Newsletter for December 1996
Let's start this newsletter off with a big hand for Nan Coyle from the Jacksonville Fair for making our A.H.A. sponsored Best of Fest club only competition a great success. The Fair donated three trophies for the winners and booth space. Even an elephant for a next door neighbor, we had a real good time! We also need to thank all the club members that donated their time for a job well done.
We are checking into doing this competition again in the future but there is a two year waiting list for clubs to host a judging and we may just get lucky and get one sooner than that. the A.H.A. was very pleased with our picks of the winners as they had won other competitions in their category and this shows that the caliber of beer drinkers in our club is excellent! We would also like to take the time to thank Chris Corneilius and John Walker for the lovely handmade banner.
Our December meeting is at Bob & Gayle Gammies' home at 354 Magnolia Street, Atlantic Beach, Saturday, December 7th, beginning at 5:00pm. A map to their house is enclosed (not on the web page) with this newsletter. Grilled brats and a vegetarian dish will be provided. Please bring a covered dish and some of your fine homebrews to drink. It is very important for you to call Gayle to RSVP so that she will know the number of people who are planning to attend and coordinate the food so we don't end up with everyone bringing the same thing. Don't forget to bring a six pack of beer for the Christmas beer exchange, if you want to participate. Also, bear in mind, that they have a dart board, pool table and hot tub so bring the appropriate thing if any of the above hold interest to you.
Don't forget...if you have anything you would like to donate to the raffle (bottles, beer, brewing equipment, etc...) please bring this with you and let's have another blow out raffle like we did a few months ago. This helps the club treasury a great deal.
We now have polo shirts with our club logo for sale, the price is $15.00 and also helps the club.
Those of you who have shirts and have not paid for them need to do so ASAP as we need the money to pay the shirt company.
One of the other subjects that was brought up was membership cards and it was unanamously carried, we will in the near future have these cards for all members.
The January 12th meeting is to be at the Malt Shop in Manadrin and we are looking to brew a Bock with the hospitality of Greg and Denise and have it at another club meeting/party in the near future. We are looking to have the March meeting at someone's home and have another party, keep this in mind and if you want to jump up and have it at your home let us know!!
The club, through a decision of members in attendance decided to back up the club's brewing so we can enter the A.H.A. competitions and this back up of schedule will be announced at the next meeting and the brew itenerary will be firmed up.
The winners of our club competitions will be submitted in the A.H.A. competitions and I look forward to seeing more people getting involved in the club judging, so... let's get into it!
An interest in becoming a certified beer judge had been expressed by more than one person in our club and I think this is an achievement that will help all of us. If you are interested in this please step forward at the next meeting and let us know as the test is soon approaching.
There was a topic of discussion concerning a team brew of 2 or 3 members getting together and doing a same style brew and this was a project that has a lot of support so if you have some input step forward at the next meeting and voice your feelings.
Bob Davis is going to pass along some info on a competition in Tallahassee that we should get into. This is a sanctioned competition by the A.H.A. and would be a feather in our cap if we were involved so if you are interested let us know in a quickness!
Remember! Club shirts are in stock so if you don't have one get one today.
If you have 1 or 2 or more please pay at the next meeting or send payment to the return address on the newsletter.
There is so may things that we as a club have coming up in the near future we need to band together and show some spirit, so ... Let's Do It!
In this newsletter, there is a copy (not on the web page) of our club roster that are current members so if you need some advice or help call a member near you and see if they can help you and if they can't then call another member or club officer.
Our club judging for the past month was a Brown Ale and Steve McMahon came in first place with Robbie Robertson in second and Steve Gilmore in third placed be a nose. Next month's beer is a Pale Ale or Holiday beer so I hope you all have a beer in the judging and look forward to our next meeting.
REMEMBER, call Gayle Gammie and let her know all the particulars of food and people in attendance as soon as you can, this is very important so don't forget.
Until we meet again,
